Cherry

A small round stoned fruit which grows in bunches. Cherry belongs to the same family of plums, apricots, peaches, etc. It varies from dark red to bright red in color. Mostly eaten raw it is also used in pies and jams. Unlike any other fruit, cherries have a very short fruiting season. Cherries have a hard seed surrounded by edible flesh.

Types

Although, there are several species of cherries cultivated, wild cherry and tart cherry are two popular cultivars. They are largely differentiated by their taste.

Nutritional Value

1. Cherries are one of low calorie fruits.
2. The cherry fruit contains dietary fiber and is high in minerals like calcium, iron, manganese, zinc, etc.
3. Cherry fruits are rich in melatonin, an antioxidant that soothes the brain neurons, calming down the nervous system.
4. Mashed cherry paste when applied on skin gives it a healthy glow.

The stem of cherry has an odour of almond.
There are more than 1000 varieties of cherries in United States but only few are produced commercially.
Cherries are know to cure headaches. Anthocyanins present in cherries act as pain relievers and anti-inflammatory. Research suggests that cherries could be as effective as aspirin!
